Esurance, headquartered in San Francisco, sells personal auto insurance policies solely through the Internet. The firm, an independent subsidiary of Folksamerica Holding Co., announced a distribution partnership this spring with California Coast Credit Union, one of San Diego`s largest credit unions. While Esurance belongs to an elite group of auto insurers that support complete online policy purchases it is important to note that the company does not sell homeowners or life insurance. Policies sold by Esurance are backed by General Re Corporation, which is rated A++ (Superior) for financial strength by the independent ratings firm A.M. Best Company.

Benefits:

Esurance allows qualified consumers to apply and purchase auto insurance policies entirely online with a major credit card (proof of coverage is available immediately). As of Spring 2001, policies were available to residents of 26 states, including CA, FL, GA, IL, MI, NY, OH, PA and VA. Esurance is licensed in an additional 22 states and plans to continue rolling out services to those remaining states throughout this next year. Existing policyholders will enjoy the convenience of access to their policies online through a password-protected area of the site.

Shortfalls:

Esurance does not offer policies to residents of several large-population states, including TX and NC. Consumers interested in purchasing a policy from Esurance must do so with a credit card as the firm is not set up to receive payments made by paper-check or electronic transfers (EFTs).
